Chunky Crochet Rug: Stashbuster!

Chunky Crochet Rug to help bust your stash of novelty yarn.

We have many needs for rugs and mats around our house. We need some in the garage, in the kitchen, on the balcony, on the patio, and in the craft room. I have a few rug craft projects going right now and I hope to cover all of our rug needs through the clever use of various kinds of yarns and fabric scraps. This chunky crochet rug currently resides in the doorway of the craft room, but will eventually help decorate the patio. The chunky crochet rug project has so many possible variations and presents a big opportunity to make use of your yarn stash!

The origin of this chunky crochet rug

After using some space in our garage to store a few things we use frequently, I decided that we needed a rug to walk on in that part of the garage. Of course I thought, “I’ll just crochet one!” And so I began the longest, thickest crochet chain made of macrame cord, multiple strands of novelty yarn, and yarn scraps. I seemed to be aiming to make this rug the width of the garage. After the first row of about 150 gigantic treble crochets I started to lose enthusiasm for the project. I wadded it up and put it in a “work in progress” basket (or really, a “work in abandonment” basket).

Initial attempt at chunky crochet rug. It grew out of control.

One day, I remembered all of the other needs for rugs in our home. Specifically, the craft room needed one to cover up the portion of the doorway the cat had scratched bare when, presumably, she wanted to learn to knit last summer. Well, I thought, maybe I could salvage some of that rug mess in that basket. I ended up frogging all but about 3 feet of chain. But really, no big deal. It was languishing in abandonment and now it’s a rug. Sometimes crochet works like that.

Supplies for making the chunky crochet rug

Novelty yarn

I have a lot of novelty yarn. I bought a lot of it for $1 a ball or skein at Dollar Tree when it started going out of style. That was back when I had extra money for craft supplies but not enough time to use them while they were still trendy. For the most part, I’m not as interested in making eyelash yarn scarves or furry hats as I was. I’ve been brainstorming ways to use this excess of fun funky yarn. In my first brainstormed project, I covered a lamp with various chains of novelty yarn.

For this project, I used Lion Brand Incredible, Lion Brand Fancy Fur, and Patons Divine. The Fancy Fur added the fuzzy black eyelash effect.

Macrame or purse cord

My wonderful Mother-in-law finds fantastic yarn for me at yard sales. One box of yarn she gave me recently contained a large quantity of Maxi-cord macrame cord. This cord served as the inspiration for the rug, as I knew I wanted to crochet something chunky with it. The cord is a flat braided 6mm cord that gives the rug its structure as a rug. Bonnie Craft Cord is the same kind of cord and comes in all sorts of pretty colors!

Scrap stash

In addition to the novelty yarns and macrame cord, I grabbed some cotton rug yarn scraps I had and used a strand to give the rug even more color and thickness. And who doesn’t like using parts of your yarn stash so you can say, “See! That’s why I kept that!” even if you’re just saying it to yourself.

Gigantic crochet hook

For this project, I used a size Q plastic crochet hook. Because the size of hook will be dependent on your mix of yarns, I recommend trying whatever hook is comfortable for your yarns and the size and tension of stitches you want. Having a few large plastic hooks on hand is helpful for this purpose! I have had good luck with this sturdy set!

Crochet instructions for the chunky crochet rug

This is the best part: You can make this however you want! What I did was crochet a chain the length I wanted the rug to be and then went back and forth with treble crochet stitches. I could see doing rows of half double crochet alternated with treble crochet for a more interesting stitch pattern. You could also try doing this in the round.

Make sure you make your foundation chain very loosely. I did not do this and my rug ended up a little uneven. Because it is going out on the patio, I’m not super concerned about it. I will make the next one more evenly.

Chunky crochet rug ended up a little tight at the bottom.

Now I have a rug!

The rug worked up to be thick and squishy. It’s pretty fun to walk on and would make a good mat to sit on, too. It ended up a little too big for the doorway where the cat attacked the carpet, but it will be a cool addition to the patio off the craft room.
