Meet the yarn stash lamp! This is an upcycled yarn-covered lamp for my craft room. Crochet chains cover the lamp, decorating it in the colors, texture, and character perfect for a craft room! I will share how to use your yarn stash to create a fun, one-of-a-kind lamp for crafting spaces.
While I can’t begin taking “before” photos of my craft room yet (it’s too cluttered to even walk in and snap pictures), I did want to start thinking about lighting, decoration, and accessories for the day when it will be a beautiful space for creativity and productivity. The room has one small window and one weak overhead bedroom light. It needs some lamps. Lamps are not difficult to find. You can go to the store and get a lamp. People get rid of lamps all the time. I was really close to becoming one of those people. I found a brown lamp in a box of my husband’s old stuff. Halfway to the box of things to donate, I remembered that I had just written “lamps” on my list of things to look for at thrift stores.
So this beauty joined my craft queue:
Lamp Vision
I could transform this into the perfect craft room lamp! It just needs to fit in with the space it was going to help illuminate. It needs to be pretty, it needs to be kind of funky, and it needs to go with other lamps I might decorate similarly. In my head, the lamp has some frizzy bits, some yarn parts, and a lot of color. After spending a little more time thinking about it, I decided that was all I needed to know. I raided my novelty yarn stash and started chaining.
I spent a few mornings simply making long chains with novelty yarn. What a fun thing to do! So therapeutic and repetitive. It reminded me of a simpler time when all I knew how to do was chain and I thought it was the coolest trick ever.
(Brief aside: I tried to teach my sister to crochet when we were little. She got as far as learning to chain. Or maybe I left off teaching her so we could fight over a doll or something. She made the longest crochet chain in existence. Imagine taking an entire skein and crocheting a long continuous chain. Pretty sure that’s what she did. Then she decided crochet wasn’t for her.)
Yarn Approach
Some of the chains had fuzz and some displayed extra yarniness and some had lots of color. Just what I had hoped for. I ended up using a ball of Lion Brand Incredible, a ball of Patons Allure, A ball of Bernat Bling Bling, a ball of Bernat Boa, about 1/2 a ball of Patons Lacette, and some Red Heart Super Saver Yarn.
I wound a chain of the Boa crocheted together with the Lacette around the lamp like a stripe on a candy cane. Then I added a chain of the allure yarn to fill in some of the gaps. The chain of bling bling pretty much had to cover the whole base of the lamp, as it was difficult to get the yarn to space evenly on the fatter part of the lamp base. Because I had a lot of chains, I added some additional texture and color by layering more chains on top. In a couple of places, I needed to use a dab of hot glue to keep a chain in a particular place, but for the most part, the yarn holds the yarn. Because the Lion Brand Incredible (a variegated ribbon yarn) was so colorful, I added it after I had the lamp pretty well covered.
I kept winding the chains around and adding more until I was satisfied with how it looked. After I added all of my chains I decided I needed more, so I crocheted more chains and added them to the lamp too. If your lamp doesn’t turn out like you had hoped, just unwind what you can (if you didn’t use glue) and add more chains. Add some different textures by adding a different novelty yarn, or add more color by using something variegated.
Matching Yarn Stash Lampshade
To top the yarn stash lamp, a garage sale lampshade got a crochet makeover as well. I made the top and bottom trim of the lampshade from a chain of bling bling and allure held together, crocheted with an L hook. I hot glued it to face of the lampshade along the top and along the bottom of the shade. Then I added a smaller chain of Incredible yarn, crocheted with a G hook, hot glued on top of it.
The awesome thing about doing this is the possibilities are endless! You can raid your stash, use scraps, pick up a fun novelty yarn for texture, choose your favorite colors and decorate a lamp that reflects you! Use some rag yarn you make from fabric scraps, use up that scratchy yarn from the box of yarn someone gave you, or that one ball of novelty yarn not enough to make into the project you originally had in mind for it. (Or am I the only one that has that kind of thing in my yarn stash?) Also, you cannot mess this up. You’re just winding yarn around a lamp base. Turn it into a project with kids! Another awesome thing about this is that you can do this to multiple lamps that didn’t match initially. Different shapes and styles of lamps can now match one another with the fun application of chained yarn. Stay tuned for updates after I attack other the extra lamps with yarn!
