I feel like I’ve gone on and on and on about how much I love crochet edging patterns. But really, what do I do with them? Sadly, I don’t have handkerchiefs to edge, and I don’t want to embellish our flannel sheets with crochet edgings. Nevertheless, I still peruse edging patterns as if I have a hope chest to fill with daintily edged tea towels. (I don’t have a hope chest.) After I finished indulging in fantasies of living in a novel from the 1900s, I vowed to come up with a practical use for crochet edgings. Recently, during the four thousandth time of flipping through pattern books that week, I started to see several potential headbands in the pages! It turns out that using edging patterns for headbands is easy and fun! Here, I give tips on choosing crochet edgings for headbands and walk through how I made a couple of headbands from edging patterns.
Choosing your crochet edgings
Part of my deal on this obsession with edging patterns is that I keep buying edging pattern books. I mean, a book full of edgings?! Who knew there could be so many!? These are just the books that are only crochet edgings. And only the books that are physical books. Several other pattern books have edging sections and there are a few books I have electronic versions of. Given that, I’ve crocheted an embarrassingly small number of edgings. But I have played around with them a bit and have some tips on how to pick which edging to use for a crochet headband.
Some edging patterns specify whether the edging is worked lengthwise or sidewise. I suggest choosing a pattern that is worked sidewise for a couple of reasons. First, beginning a pattern having to crochet into 120 chain stitches isn’t very fun. Second, your headband will most likely have more give along its length if you use a side to side pattern. This allows you to stretch it a little to put it on and it will contract back to help it fit snugly on your head.
In addition to choosing a sideways edging, opt for a pattern that is fairly sturdy. You want it to be able to stretch and then stay in place on your head. Edgings with a row of chain stitches holding it all together might not qualify. Some edgings are just a little too dainty for this job.
Purple crochet headband from crochet edgings
The purple headband is edging number 43 from Fifty Beautiful Edgings by Terry Kimbrough. I found the pattern to be fairly simple, with frequent repeats that made the stitches easy to remember. The edging stretches nicely the long way and is perfect for a headband. It could have done without the added elastic, but the elastic gives it some extra stretch and puts a little less strain on the crocheted part. I made this headband with size 20 crochet thread, giving it a somewhat lacy appearance without compromising the structure of the headband.
To determine how long to make it, I held the edging up to my head. When it reached about 2” shy of making the full circle from the crown of my head to the back of my neck, I stopped. Alternatively, I suppose you could measure your head where you want the headband to sit and make your edging that length. (I’m frequently crocheting during my lunch break so I don’t always have a tape measure with me, as much as I’d like to be able to pull any given thing out of my bag, I don’t have Hermoine’s beaded bag. Or Mary Poppins’ satchel.)
Navy crochet headband from crochet edgings
After making the purple headband, I decided to make another headband with size 10 crochet thread. The size 10 gave the headband a bit more structure, plus I already had some in navy blue! I seem to wear navy blue most of the time, so why not make a matching headband? And I kept flipping through the edging books looking for something else to make.
For the navy headband, I decided to pick a thicker edging with a simpler stitch pattern. It’s made entirely of double crochet and chain stitches! It works up quickly and I had the pattern down after crocheting the first three rows. Even though I don’t usually go for the simplest patterns, this one sang to me. This one is edging number 60 in 111 Easy Edgings by Terry Kimbrough. This book contains only edgings worked sideways, so you have your pick of many different headband possibilities!
Rather than insert elastic like I did for the purple one, this time I decided to let the stitches do the stretching. When the edging fit all the way around the crown of my head to the back of my neck, I used a single crochet seam to complete the headband. The stitches are stretchy enough to allow me to put the headband on and then contract again when the headband is in place.

One summer during college, I worked in an English tea restaurant. We had to wear a little strip of fabric with some eyelet lace on our heads as part of our uniform. I think we were supposed to look like English maids. My roommate often chided me about putting a doily on my head when I was getting ready for work. At the time, I felt pretty silly. To be honest, this feels a tiny bit like putting a doily on my head again, but now I’m a lot less self-conscious about it! In fact, with my next headband in progress, I fully embrace the concept.
When I first chose edging patterns, I focused on ones that were symmetrical. Then it occurred to me that I didn’t have a reason for that. Looking through the pattern books yet again, I found many more that could be super cute. The doily-like headband work in progress is pattern number 84 in the Rita Weiss book 101 Crochet Edgings. Your best bet for this book might be finding a used copy. This book contains both sideways constructed edgings as well as crochet edgings that require you to make a thousand-stitch-long chain to start. The author very helpfully labels them for you!
Seriously, looking at the frilliness in that picture is making me second-guess myself. Do I really want to wear something that lacy on my head? if I decide that I don’t want to, I am sure one of my nieces will! That’s the wonderful thing about headbands! Everybody has a head.
