Thread Crochet Dragonfly: Free Crochet Pattern

For some reason, this is the first crochet dragonfly I have tried to make. I have loved dragonflies for years. For my 25th birthday, I made dragonflies out of tulle and pipe cleaners and hung them from curling ribbon from my living room ceiling and left it up all summer. I have received many dragonfly-decorated items as gifts from friends and family members who are aware of my affinity for dragonflies. My logo has a dragonfly in it! But until now, I had never crocheted one. This tiny crochet dragonfly makes me smile and I’m happy to share the pattern with you today!

Thread crochet dragonfly. About the size of a penny.

Thread Crochet Dragonfly Experimentation

When I knew I wanted to make this little bug, I put some size 80 crochet thread and .5mm steel hook in my bag and planned to work on it during lunch. Size eighty. That’s pretty tiny. And most hook size charts don’t go down to .5mm. (It’s either a 16 or an 18 depending on who is making it.) I soon realized that while I might have been able to crochet something that tiny 20 years ago, it wasn’t really working now. The thread kept slipping out of my fingers and I wished I had one of those magnifying glasses that model painters use.

To play around with the stitches, I used two strands of the size 80 thread and switched to a .9mm hook. The variegated messes in this picture show the first couple of attempts with two strands of 80.

Crochet Dragonfly and dragonfly attempts

After getting back home, I found my size 20 thread and a 1.4mm hook and had much better luck. While playing around with stitches I learned my favorite way of making the wings (so far) is to crochet each pair and fasten off and then to slip stitch them to the body while making slip stitches on the body chain to thicken it up. It does mean more ends to wave in, which is a drag. But it was a good trade off compared to the other messes I ended up making with thread.

I made the leaf in the pictures while playing around with leaf embellishments.

I look forward to reading your comments and questions. Has anyone else had issues with crocheting with tiny thread tha
